Makajiki is a ficticious pescatarian restaurant offering traditional multi-course meals in the Kaiseki style. The purpose of this design was to expand my illustrative style into more upper-level forms of design. The pattern for the background was created by hand-carving a traditional Japanese wave pattern into linoleum and printing onto paper with india ink. The print was then scanned into Illustrator and altered to have better cohesion as a vector graphic. The structure of the menu itself is based on the phases of the moon, a celestial body that has intimate ties with our oceans. This style reflects the aquatic themes of the restaurant and the seasonal menu traditions of Kaiseki.
